Is your skin actually sensitive, or is it sensitised?

Sensitive skin you are born with. Sensitised skin you acquire, and it can be reversed. Here is how to tell which one you have, and what each actually needs.

The words Sensitive and Sensitised set side by side, one born with and one acquired
Figure 01 Β·BARRIER

"Sensitive skin" gets used for two completely different situations, and the difference decides whether your skin can get better or just has to be managed. One you are born with. The other you acquired, usually from your own routine, and it is reversible. Most people who tell us they have sensitive skin turn out to have the second one.

The difference, in one table

Sensitive skin Sensitised skin
Where it comes from Genetic. A naturally thinner barrier and a more reactive nervous response in the skin Acquired. A barrier that has been worn down by products, weather, or over-cleansing
When it started As long as you can remember You can usually name a rough month it began
What sets it off Fairly consistent triggers you have known for years Almost everything, including things that were fine last year
Can it change? Managed, not cured Yes. Usually within four to six weeks
The fix Choose products carefully, permanently Strip the routine back and let the barrier rebuild

The reason this matters: if you have sensitised skin and you treat it as permanent, you will keep buying gentler and gentler products and stay stuck. The problem is not that you have not found the right product. It is that you are using too many.

Is this you?

Sensitised skin has a recognisable pattern:

  • Things that never used to sting now sting, including plain water or a moisturiser you have used for years.
  • Your skin looks slightly red or flushed in a way that is new.
  • It feels tight after cleansing and stays tight.
  • It is flaky in patches but can still get oily in others.
  • It got worse after you added an active, changed the seasons, or started a new routine you were excited about.

That last one is the giveaway. Sensitised skin very often follows a period of doing more, not less. Retinoids, acids, vitamin C, a new cleanser and a facial brush, all introduced in the same fortnight, is a barrier problem waiting to happen.

Genuinely sensitive skin is steadier. It reacts to specific things, it has done so for years, and it does not usually change character overnight.

What sensitised skin actually needs

Less. That is the whole answer, and it is unsatisfying because it does not involve buying anything.

For four weeks, cut back to three steps:

  1. A gentle cleanser, once a day, at night. Water in the morning is enough for most people while skin is recovering.
  2. One hydrating step onto damp skin. Something simple and humectant led.
  3. One sealing step on top to hold it there.

Pause the actives. All of them. Not forever, just long enough to see what your skin looks like without them. Reintroduce one at a time, a fortnight apart, so if something flares you know exactly what did it.

If you want the mechanism behind those three steps, we wrote it up in occlusive, emollient, humectant. Understanding which of the three you are short of makes this much less guesswork.

Where our products fit

Both Green Glow formulas were built for this kind of skin, so it would be strange not to mention them, but they are the seal and the softness in that three-step routine, not a treatment.

Seed Glow Face Oil is sixteen cold-pressed botanical oils and nothing else. No fragrance, no parfum, no essential oils, no preservatives, because a waterless oil does not need them. Fragrance is the single most common cause of contact reactions in skincare, so leaving it out is the most useful thing a formula can do for reactive skin. One caution worth stating plainly: it contains macadamia and sweet almond oil, so skip it if you have a tree-nut allergy.

Universal Balm is the sealing step. Eight ingredients, waterless, fragrance-free, with organic shea and cocoa seed butter doing the softening and Manuka beeswax doing the sealing. The beeswax means it is not vegan, and we would rather say so than let you find out from the ingredient list.

Neither will fix a sensitised barrier on its own. Removing whatever sensitised it is what fixes it. These make the recovery more comfortable.

What this will not do

This will not tell you whether you have an allergy. An allergy is an immune response to a specific ingredient, it can appear at any age, and it does not resolve by simplifying your routine. If one product reliably causes the same reaction every time, that is worth a patch test at minimum.

It also will not help with rosacea, perioral dermatitis or eczema, all of which look like sensitive skin from the outside and none of which are skincare problems. Persistent redness, bumps that will not clear, cracked or weeping skin, or anything that is getting worse rather than better is a conversation with a GP or a dermatologist, not a shopping decision.

Common questions

How long does sensitised skin take to recover?
Usually four to six weeks of doing less. The first week often feels worse before it settles, because you have removed the things that were masking it.

Can I have both?
Yes, and plenty of people do. Naturally sensitive skin that has also been sensitised is the most uncomfortable combination, and it is the one that benefits most from stripping the routine right back.

Is fragrance really the main culprit?
It is the most common single one, including natural fragrance and essential oils. "Naturally derived" and "gentle" are not the same claim.

Do I need to throw out my actives?
No. Pause them, reintroduce one at a time, and you will usually find you can tolerate more than you expect once the barrier is intact.
