The Origins of Ayurveda

Ayurveda is an ancient Indian system of holistic medicine and wellness that dates back over 3,000 years. The term "Ayurveda" translates to "knowledge of life" in Sanskrit. Some of the earliest mentions of Ayurvedic principles are found in the Rig Veda, Atharva Veda, and Upanishads, ancient Indian texts dating back to 1500–500 BCE.

According to these texts, Ayurveda is connected to the Hindu gods Brahma and Daksha, and was considered a gift from the gods to help humans lead healthy, balanced lives. Over the centuries, renowned vaidyas (Ayurvedic practitioners) like Charaka and Sushruta helped develop and collate this knowledge into what we know as Ayurveda today.

Key Principles of Ayurveda

Ayurveda focuses on maintaining the balance between mind, body and spirit. Some of its core principles are:

  • Tridosha Theory - The three life forces, Vata, Pitta and Kapha, govern all physiological functions and psychological traits. An imbalance manifests as illness.
  • Individual Constitution - Every person has a unique mix of Vata, Pitta and Kapha called Prakriti, an innate constitution that remains constant throughout life.
  • Holistic Lifestyle - Diet, exercise, routine and mindset all impact health. Ayurveda takes a whole-person approach to wellness rather than simply treating symptoms.
  • Natural Healing - Treatment draws on herbs, plant extracts, dietary adjustment, detox routines, yoga and massage, with surgery or medication as a last resort.

Ayurveda Today

While Ayurveda originated in India over three millennia ago, its holistic approach to health remains deeply relevant today. Modern research continues to validate many Ayurvedic approaches and remedies, most of which focus on prevention and long-term wellbeing rather than reactive treatment alone, a gentle, balanced way to nurture mind and body.
